HTTP Protocol Gateway Timeout

The 504 Gateway Timeout error indicates that the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it needed to access in order to complete the request. This often points to issues with backend services or network connectivity between the proxy and the backend.

Common Causes

  • Upstream server (e.g., application server, database) is overloaded, crashed, or unresponsive.
  • Network connectivity issues or firewall blocks between the proxy/gateway and the upstream server.
  • DNS resolution problems on the proxy/gateway server preventing it from finding the upstream host.
  • Proxy, load balancer, or API Gateway timeout settings are too low for the expected response time of the upstream service.
  • Long-running requests in the backend application exceeding the configured timeout limits.
  • Resource exhaustion (CPU, memory) on the upstream server.

How to Fix

1 Check Upstream Server Status and Logs

Verify that the backend application server(s) are running, healthy, and not under excessive load. Review their logs for errors, long-running processes, or resource bottlenecks.

2 Increase Proxy/Load Balancer Timeout Settings

4 Optimize Backend Application Performance
